Experts Debate Online Gambling Measures18 February 2002CALFORNIA – The dream of getting rich quick through Internet gambling turned into a cyberspace nightmare for Marin County resident Cynthia Haines. In her short, unhappy online encounter with the laws of probability, Haines racked up over $100,000 in gaming debts, all charged to her Visa and MasterCard accounts. When San Francisco-based Providian National Bank, which issued one of the cards, took her to court, she countersued, alleging the bank engaged in unfair business practices by granting merchant accounts to Internet casinos. Remarkably, Haines prevailed in the case, filed by San Rafael attorney Ira Rothken. Haines did not have to pay her gambling debts and her legal costs were covered. And Providian agreed to no longer allow its cards to be used for Internet gambling. |
