Expert: Thai Underground Lottery Will Return2 June 2003THAILAND – As reported by the Bangkok Post: "The clampdown on underground lottery operators is not a long-term solution to the problem of dark influence, a prominent academic said yesterday. "Prof Sangsit Piriyarangsan of Chulalongkorn University's economics faculty said it was evident from his study that the underground lottery was only temporarily on hold. "…The government's action in moving against both large and small-scale operators was simplistic and did not take the realities into consideration. "…While both large and small operators had shut up shop for fear of police arrest, gamblers had simply switched to buying government lottery tickets. "…The underground lottery has existed in Thailand for about 200 years. "It was part of the local people's way of life. "The government should listen to people and use proper studies to come up with appropriate solutions, not just try to enforce the laws, he said…" |
