Ex-Louisiana Gov. Loses Bid for Rehearing24 September 2002NEW ORLEANS -- As reported by the Associated Press: ``Former Gov. Edwin Edwards and suspended state insurance chief Jim Brown both lost bids Monday to have a federal appeals court take a second look at their criminal convictions. ``The full 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals refused to reconsider the convictions of Edwards and three co-defendants found guilty of extorting applicants for riverboat casino licenses during the 1990s. ``The court also refused to rehear arguments from Brown, who was convicted of lying to the FBI during an investigation of the liquidation of a failed insurance company. ``...Both men said they will go to the U.S. Supreme Court, but realize it is a long shot because the high court takes up only a tiny percentage of the appeals it receives. ``...Edwards, ...faces a 10-year prison sentence for racketeering, extortion and fraud..." |
