Ex-Investigator Enters Gambling Plea30 April 2003NEW JERSEY -- As reported by the Courier-Post: ``A former Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office investigator charged with running a bookmaking operation pleaded guilty Tuesday in a deal that bars him from any future public employment. Matthew Ebert, 30, pleaded guilty to one count of promoting gambling under an agreement with the state Attorney General's Office. ``The West Deptford man was dismissed from his $67,000-a-year job Feb. 6 after Prosecutor Sean F. Dalton learned that state authorities had arrested Ebert. ``Ebert had been operating an organized gambling ring that took bets on football, baseball and basketball games, authorities said. ``…`He's agreed to seek counseling for his gambling addiction,' said Ebert's lawyer, Dennis Wixted. Ebert also agreed to forfeit his right to hold public office, the attorney said. ``…Wixted said the gambling activity was unrelated to Ebert's job. 'He was not doing anything in the office' and the betting didn't involve targets of investigations, he said…" |
