Ex-dealers dispute statements

2 September 2008

LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- Former Excalibur poker dealers are disputing MGM Mirage's statements that they have been placed in gaming jobs at the company's other resorts.

More than 40 Excalibur poker dealers lost their positions because of the casino's conversion to a fully automated poker room, which doesn't use dealers. Excalibur Vice President of Casino Operations Todd DeRemer said an undisclosed number of poker dealers were transferred to other casinos operated by MGM Mirage, which runs the Excalibur. Some of the dealers were offered different dealing positions within the Excalibur.

He said last week that positions are still being sought for some dealers, who received their final paychecks on Aug. 22.

Brian Puter, a former Excalibur dealer, said the resort did not do enough to help dealers find new positions. Some, he said, were offered jobs at a lower pay scale than they were earning at the Excalibur.

"I really don't believe that MGM Mirage did anything for us," Puter said. "Some of us had been with the Excalibur since it opened."
