European Union Wants 'Net Control

12 April 2000

The European Union (EU) revealed at an April 11 meeting of its executive that it is looking at ways of improving how the Internet is controlled.

According to Newsbytes' Steve Gold, industry experts are skeptical of the EU's proposals, due to the fact the 'net is already loosely controlled by mainly US interests.

The EU claims their position is one that seeks to improve e-commerce overseas. They aim to create a new ".eu" domain name for use by companies under their jurisdiction.

The EU's position is that the Internet's capacity to unleash enterprise is beyond question.

According to Gold, EU IT Commissioner Erkki Liikanen said that the EU must now show that its infrastructure can be run fairly and effectively, to the benefit of all its users.

"The Internet needs a light touch from the regulators, but a firm hand to ensure that its business-generating, job-creating potential is encouraged to the full," he said.
