European Commission warns France

25 July 2007

The European Commission has given France until Aug. 24 to respond to its opinion that France's gambling draft laws do not allow foreign gaming companies the opportunity to operate inside the country, according to a Commission source.

The opinion states that France may be in violation of article 49 of the EU treaty, which details the Commission's free provision of services. Commission spokesperson Ton Von Lierop said France was sent an opinion on the matter on last week.

Ignoring the ruling could result in the Commission launching infringement proceeding, Lierop said.
