Ensign Plans to Block Nevada College Sports Bet Ban

LAS VEGAS -- As reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal: "A Nevada senator said he's confident he can block another attempt by Sen. John McCain to prohibit Nevada sports books from taking bets on college games and other amateur sporting events.

`I'm never 100 percent sure, but I'm fairly sure we would have more votes this time in committee,' said Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., a member of the Senate Commerce Committee.

"The last major fight over the betting ban was two years ago, when the commerce committee deadlocked 10-10 on an Ensign amendment - effectively derailing the sports betting ban.

"McCain, R-Ariz., the committee chairman, reintroduced the bill on Tuesday. He could choose to bypass the panel and seek a vote directly on the Senate floor.

"...A 1992 law banned sports betting in all states except Nevada, Delaware, Montana and Oregon. Nevada is the only state where sports books accept wagers on college games.

"Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., who worked closely with Ensign to stop McCain's bill two years ago, called the betting ban misguided and said he'll continue to fight it...."
