Engineer Fired in Pick Six Probe1 November 2002NEW YORK – As reported by the New York Daily News: "Autotote Systems, Inc. has fired a `rogue software engineer' and turned over evidence to the New York State Racing and Wagering Board and New York state police in connection with last weekend's Breeders' Cup Pick Six probe. "Autotote is a subsidiary of Scientific Games Corporation, and is the tote system supplier for 10 of the top 15 thoroughbred racetracks in North America as well as 10 of the top 12 off-track betting corporations. That includes Catskill OTB, where the only winning Pick Six wagers were placed via a telephone account by a Maryland resident, Derrick Davis. SGC chairman Lorne Weil said the fired employee may have altered betting tickets for Davis. "…Weil said an internal investigation found that the software engineer had the knowledge and ability to alter a ticket to make it appear to have been purchased earlier than it actually was. "…Davis placed his wagers through a telephone account he set up a week before the Breeders' Cup through InterBets.com, which is operated by Catskill OTB. The unusual nature of the wager — a $12 ticket, or the $2 Pick Six bet six times — raised immediate suspicion. Sunday, the New York State Racing and Wagering Board was asked by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association and the Breeders' Cup Limited to investigate, and the total payout of $3.06 million is being withheld. "…In his bet, Davis, a computer-service technician who lives in Baltimore, singled one horse in each of the first four legs of the Pick 6 and then used all eight horses in the Turf and all 12 horses in the Classic. "…Davis spent $1,152 on his wagers, ending up with the only six winning Pick Six tickets (he has been quoted as saying he meant to bet only a $2 ticket, but was unable to cancel the $12 wager) as well as 108 of the 186 consolation Pick Six tickets. The consolation (for picking five of six) paid $4,606.20 per ticket. The winning Pick Six payoff was $428,392 on a $2 ticket, making his total winnings $3.1 million…" |
