Employees Cash In On Casino Work25 November 2001CONNECTICUT – Nov. 25, 2001 –As reported by the Connecticut Day: "…Since Mohegan Sun opened its doors in October 1996 to compete with Foxwoods Resort Casino, Connecticut's two American Indian-owned gaming halls have sparred in a battle of benefits one-upmanship. "Last spring Mohegan Sun said it was offering an employer-paid retirement savings plan and Foxwoods responded with the announcement of a rewards program that pays bonuses to nonsupervisory workers. "Mohegan Sun upped the ante in its efforts to hire 3,500 new workers last summer and said it would pay a $500 bonus for every successful employee an existing worker recruited. Foxwoods, which had been paying employees a $200 bonus for referrals, upped its fee to $600. "...As a result, both casinos offer such extensive benefit packages — even part-timers are eligible for many benefits — that other employers in the region find it difficult to recruit and retain employees. "…Each casino offers a comprehensive medical, dental and vision package, as well as matching 401(k) plans, life insurance, tuition reimbursement, and disability insurance. Workers get free meals, holiday appreciation parties and on-site training. "At Foxwoods, a coveted benefit is a free prescription drug program, with no cost at all for many medications filled at the tribal pharmacy. "Mohegan Sun offers health benefits to domestic partners of full- and part-time workers, one of just a handful of employers in the state to offer coverage to same-sex and opposite-sex partners who are not married…" |
