Edmonton Mall Officials Object to Casino Plan

7 July 2003

EDMONTON, Alberta – As reported by the Edmonton Sun: “ Look for some big changes on West Edmonton Mall's Bourbon Street as early as this fall.

“…Negotiations are under way to lure some new restaurants to the street that are owned by world-renowned chef/restaurateur Wolfgang Puck.

“…Wall officials won't comment on the situation, presumably because leasing negotiations are still under way.

“But one thing WEM officials are more than happy to talk about is their objection to the planned development of a $120-million entertainment complex and casino by the Enoch Cree First Nation.

“It's to be built on the city's western boundary a stone's throw from the neighbourhood of Lewis Estates.

“…West Edmonton Mall general manager Gary Hanson says his corporation objects to the Enoch plan `because it creates an un-level playing field’ for WEM's Palace Casino and others in Edmonton.

“`The province is allowing five native casinos and they'll have to give the province just 30% of the proceeds,’ says Hanson. `Other charity casinos like ours give 70% of proceeds to the province.’

“`That's just not fair - and the Enoch complex will impact local casinos.’…”
