Economy Prompts Hawaii Gambling Debate

HONOLULU, Hawaii – Dec. 14, 2001 –As reported by the Associated Press: "Hawaii's slow economy is sparking once again the debate on legalizing gambling to attract more tourists.

"Senate President Robert Bunda, who earlier this year called for a legislative study into gambling, said he supports designating an area in Hawaii where resorts would offer gambling.

"…Senate Vice President Colleen Hanabusa, D-Nanakuli-Waianae-Makaha, however, said she probably would not support gambling if it is proposed in next year's legislative session.

"Lobbyists representing gambling interests said there is growing interest in gambling because of the new economic slump that came just as the state was recovering from nearly 10 years of a slow economy.

"John Radcliffe, who represents Detroit MotorCity Casino part-owner Marian Ilitch, said nothing will improve the state's economic condition faster than gambling.

"…Hawaii Coalition Against Legalized Gambling President Dorothy Bobilin said a poor economy is no reason to let in gambling as the easy answer for people who don't want to consider economic diversity.

"…Sen. David Matsuura, D-South Hilo-Puna, who opposes legalized gambling, said the matter could be put to the voters in the form of a constitutional amendment prohibiting casinos and a lottery.

"If it passes, the issue is dead, but if is rejected, the Legislature would have to look at gambling, he said…"
