Domestic Programme Swings Back Into Action

29 March 1999

sponsored by TEAMtalk

SOCCER

After the euphoria of England's emphatic 3-1 defeat of Poland at Wembley, the domestic programme swings back into action this weekend with all three Premier League title contenders on their travels.

Champions Arsenal travel to take on relegation-threatened Southampton for a match which they should win, having not lost away from home since December 1998. Manchester United will be expected to take three points from Wimbledon as they seek to maintain their dream of fulfilling a unique treble of honours, with the European Cup, FA Cup and Premiership title still within their grasp. And title outsiders Chelsea will be favourites to take maximum points from troubled club Charlton Athletic, who have only won four games at home this season to date. The Premier League's basement club, Nottingham Forest, who have won just three games this season on their travels, face an uphill task in taking anything at in-form Leeds United, who have lost just twice on home soil.

In the Scottish Premier League, champions Celtic entertain Dundee at Parkhead for a match which they simply must win if they are to keep in touch with title favourites Glasgow Rangers, who travel to take on St. Johnstone. Rangers have established a nine-point gap at the top of the table, and Celtic will acknowledge that defeat against a team they have already drawn with this season will surely rule them out of the championship equation.

RUGBY LEAGUE

This weekend sees Rugby Union's prestigious Tetley's Bitter Cup semifinals, which features four teams from the Allied Dunbar Premiership pitted against each other. Wasps will take on Gloucester and Richmond will entertain Newcastle.

Last year's beaten finalists, Wasps, entertain a Gloucester side who've been hit by travel sickness this season. Wasps warmed-up for the semifinal with a narrow defeat at Leicester, while Gloucester lost on the road again at lowely Bedford. Richmond's reward for beating Leicester in the quarterfinals is a home tie against Newcastle at the magnificent Madjeski Stadium. Newcastle have been mediocre in defence of last season's title, and a depleted side were destroyed by Northampton at the weekend.
