Dog Fighting on the Rise29 August 2002CHARLESTON, West Virginia – (Press Release) -- Many of us reward our dogs when they obey. Some owners reward their dogs for killing other animals. Dog fighting is a growing problem. Humane officers say it's most prevalent within city neighborhoods. "Wednesday, officers say they found two dead dogs. They believe the owner let the dogs fight each other to the death. They rescued another dog at the same house. It was outside and is now at the animal shelter. "Humane Officer, Jesse Harris knows the dogs in the shelter by name. He brought many of them to the shelter because their owners trained them to fight. "…Studies say it leads to problems in our neighborhoods. Dog fighters are often involved in gambling, the sale of drugs and weapons. Dog fighters and spectators have a history of violent behavior toward people. Dogs trained for fighting can attack innocent people for no reason "….Unfortunately, they won't be able to adopt [the rescued dog] out so it will probably be put to sleep. "Humane officers say that's because they don't know how it will behave. "…Humane officers say unless they witness the dogs fighting, it's very hard to prosecute owners for dog fighting. So they often end up charging them just with animal cruelty…" |
