Dickinson County, Iowa Voters Soundly Reject Casino Plan

DICKINSON COUNTY, Iowa -- As reported by the DesMoines Register: ``Dickinson County residents voted overwhelmingly Tuesday against authorizing riverboat-style gambling in the Iowa Great Lakes region, one of the state's most popular tourist areas.

``With all precincts reporting, the vote was 5,092 against to 1,939 in favor, or 72 percent to 28 percent, according to the county auditor's office in Spirit Lake.

``A heated referendum campaign had been been waged for months in the northwest Iowa county. Gambling supporters said they were battling for economic progress, and they noted that thousands of area residents already travel to casinos in Minnesota and South Dakota.

``Opponents said they wanted to preserve the family image of the Iowa Great Lakes, which host more than 100,000 people at times during the peak summer months..."
