Developer of Failed New Orleans Casino Dies1 December 2003HONOLULU, Hawaii -- As reported by the Associated Press: "Chris Hemmeter, a powerful Hawaii developer who lost much of his vast fortune in a failed attempt to build a $1 billion casino in New Orleans, has died after years of battling Parkinson's disease and various forms of cancer. "Hemmeter, 64, was with family members when he died Thanksgiving Day at his Los Angeles home, said his son, Mark Hemmeter. "…The city of New Orleans leased Hemmeter city property and he won a license for a mammoth casino complex near the French Quarter. The project struggled financially and was forced into bankruptcy in 1995, before it was completed. "Hemmeter, who blamed government corruption for the project's demise, also endured the failure of two riverboat casinos in New Orleans and bankruptcies of his Bushwhackers Casinos in Colorado and a publicly traded real estate investment trust he headed…" |
