Developer Defends Louisiana Track Proposal13 June 2002SHREVEPORT, Louisiana – As reported by the Associated Press: "The developer of a proposed quarterhorse race track in northwestern Louisiana says opposition would subside if critics would give him an opportunity to present a complete plan. "The Texas Station Racetrack will apply later this month to the Louisiana Racing Commission for a racing permit, with a hearing and decision expected in August or September. "Louis Roussel III, the former owner of the Fair Grounds in New Orleans and a riverboat casino, has secured land in Greenwood. If approved by the Racing Commission, Greenwood voters would then have to approve the track and video gaming for about 1,400 to 1,500 video poker or slot machines. "…Roussel said the track would create 400 new jobs and would not compete with Louisiana Downs, which runs thoroughbreds. Roussel also said his track would not run at the same time as the Bossier City track. Texas Station also would hire Louisiana Downs' seasonal employees and rent stable space from that track, Roussel said. "…Roussel sold the Fair Grounds in 1990 and later owned the Star Casino in New Orleans. That boat was eventually sold and moved to Lake Charles..." |
