Detroit Study: Casinos Didn't Increase Problem Gamblers

8 February 2002

DETROIT, Michigan – Feb. 8, 2002 –As reported by the Detroit News: "An estimated 11.4 percent of Detroit residents and 4.5 percent of Michigan adults view themselves as "lifetime compulsive gamblers," according to a new survey by Michigan's Community Health Department.

"Statistically, the number of compulsive gamblers has remained relatively steady statewide despite the July 1999 debut of Detroit casinos. That suggests problem gamblers have always found outlets for their compulsion, such as the racetrack, lottery or illegal betting.

"`Most compulsive gamblers tell us that they started gambling as teen-agers and often with activities not associated with casinos, such as sports betting,' said Jim McBryde, manager for Michigan's compulsive gambling programs.

"…The 36-page report also noted that compulsive gambling is often related to other destructive activities. `Gambling is associated with other kinds of behavior, such as alcohol use and the like,' said Arlen Gullickson, Western Michigan University project director for the study."
