Detroit Riverfront Casino Plan in Jeopardy

DETROIT, Michigan – April 19, 2001 –As reported by Detroit Now: "Mayor Archer's dream of bringing casinos to Detroit's riverfront will likely end when he leaves office. The Detroit City Council is expected to reject the riverfront casino plan.

"Five out of 9 city council members are already on the record as opposing the new casino plan. Riverfront land owners say they're shocked at the turn of events.

"After Archer's surprise announcement Tuesday, the owner of one riverfront business feels left in the lurch. He's concerned the city will back out of its commitments after letting the neighborhood fall into disrepair.

"…`It does not look good for his plans for relocating the casinos. I don't think he can adequately push those things if people have the idea he won't be around to take some of the blame,' said City Council President Gil Hill.

"…Most riverfront landowners feel they are caught in the middle.

"…`It's just gone down. The restaurants are all closed. A lot of the firms have left here already. They were hoping that the city will take over, which is what they promised us. Now nothing,' Mirvan Hayes,[owner of Hayes Grinding], said…"
