Detroit Residents Flock to the Majestic Star3 November 1997GARY, Ind. -- Hundreds of metropolitan Detroit residents traveled from "Motown to the Majestic Star" in Gary, Indiana for a gala premiere featuring Don Barden's riverboat casino, The Majestic Star, on Saturday, November 1, 1997. "The Majestic Star is among the five largest vessels of this nature in U.S. waters," stated Don H. Barden, Chairman and President of the Majestic Star Casino. The $50 million vessel, designed by Guido Perla and Associates, renowned naval architects, features 80,000 square feet of usable space including 1,550 slot machines, 70 table games and casino space for 2,500 players. This extraordinary vessel replaced the old Majestic Star that was being leased from Presidential Casinos since its opening in June of 1996. The new Majestic Star premiered in Detroit September 27, 1997 for a benefit that raised over $50,000 for the production of "Porgy & Bess." Over 2,000 Metropolitan Detroit residents got a peek at the vessel and were mesmerized by its size and magnificence. "Don Barden's Majestic Star Casino is breathtaking," stated Bloomfield Hills resident, Dr. George C. Hill. "It makes me proud to see an African American accomplish as much as Don Barden has." |
