Detroit Mayor Selects Casino Sites

17 February 1998

DETROIT -- In a presentation before Detroit City Council, Detroit Mayor Dennis W. Archer announced on February 16 his final choices for casino development sites, and proposed that they be part of a new Waterfront Reclamation and Casino Development Project in the City of Detroit.

Mayor Archer recommended that two casinos be built in Detroit's Riverview area by the Detroit Entertainment LLC and MGM Grand-Detroit LLC development groups, within a defined area of approximately 57 acres. He also suggested that the casino to be built by Greektown Casino LLC remain in Greektown.

"The development of this project area as I have suggested would allow us to create a premier destination development," the Mayor said. "The site will combine significant open green space for public recreational use primarily along the river's edge, a casino enclave and entertainment and associated retail venues to enhance already existing attractions, such as Chene Park.".
