Detroit Mayor Awaits Judge's Decision19 June 2002DETROIT, Michigan – As reported by Detroit Now: "Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick says it looks like the city has no other choice but to wait out a judge's decision on the Detroit casinos. Yesterday, the U.S. Supreme court backed the judge who may reopen the bids on one or more of the casinos. "…It is not the way they wanted it, to have the ruling of the judge in Grand Rapids stand. Several months ago, he decided that the choices for Detroit gaming licenses that gave the Greektown and Motor City developers preferential treatment was unconstitutional. Now, the U.S. Supreme Court won't review that decision. "…`Judge Robert Holmes Bell has to make a decision on whether to rebid, or what kind of remedy, and all those different things. It doesn't weaken or strengthen our case. We are at the same position we were yesterday,' said Mr. Kilpatrick. "And that position is in a wait-and-see mode. There is no doubt that the judge, out west, could come up with a current decision as to what to do with the current licenses at any time…" |
