Detroit Extends Casino Deadline 45 More Days25 April 2002DETROIT, Michigan – (Press Release) -- Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, who initially bristled at the city council's request for 60 days to finalize agreements with Detroit's three casinos, asked on Wednesday for 45 more days to consider the proposals. "The council on Wednesday extended until June 15 the city's temporary development agreements with MGM Grand Detroit, Greektown and MotorCity casinos. The extra time, requested by Kilpatrick and the casino developers, follows a 30-day extension granted in March to reach agreements covering terms of permanent casinos in the city. It assures the three casinos will remain open until the new agreements are finalized. "…In requesting the extra time, the mayor ultimately confirmed the council's initial premise: The 30 days he initially gave it to review and approve development agreements were not enough -- particularly because the council still doesn't have all three in hand. "…Council members have complained that the proposed agreements fall short of initial plans for casinos, and have submitted more than 150 questions to the administration." |
