Detroit Council Wants Casino Deals Sooner10 April 2002DETROIT, Michigan – As reported by the Detroit News: "Final development agreements with the city's three casinos will not be delivered to the City Council until at least next week, according to Council President Maryann Mahaffey. "Mahaffey said the council won't have enough time to consider the agreements before the April 30 deadline, since members will begin work on the new city budget proposal that Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick presents it Friday. "Kilpatrick spokeswoman Regina Strong said the council already has enough information to make a decision on the development agreements by April 30. Strong said the final development agreements won't differ much from the documents the mayor's office gave council members last week. "…The council and Kilpatrick have battled over how much time the council needs to review and put into effect tentative agreements he struck with the casinos for their permanent facilities, which are to include hotels. "But despite Kilpatrick's announcement that the council would get completed agreements, the 50-page packets members received last week were unsigned. That means no deal has been finalized with the casino developers, and the council is simply reviewing proposals…" |
