Detroit City Council Rejects Mayor's Casino Proposal

30 May 2002

DETROIT, Michigan – As reported by the Associated Press: "The City Council has rejected Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's proposed agreements under which Detroit's three casinos would build permanent gambling halls.

"…The council said it `urges the mayor to return to the negotiating table with the goal of bringing back casino development deals which meet the goal of enhancing the quality of life for Detroit's citizen and business community,' the Detroit Free Press reported.

"The six council members said Kilpatrick still has until June 15 to negotiate a better deal for the city. Detroit's existing agreements with the casinos expire that day.

"Kilpatrick said he had no intention of renegotiating the agreements.

"…The council has said the agreements should include provisions for minority- and small-business development funding, college scholarships for Detroit students and housing for low- and moderate-income families."
