Detroit Casinos Roll Over to Cashless Slots7 January 2002DETROIT, Michigan –– As reported by the Associated Press: "The clink of cash winnings at slot machines is moving closer to becoming a thing of the past at the city's casinos. "Greektown Casino is hoping to convert a fifth of its slot machines to cashless by the end of the year, and Casino Windsor is waiting approval from Ontario gaming regulators to introduce cashless slots on a trial basis as early as this spring. "…The changes parallel what is expected to happen nationally. A 2001 Goldman Sachs survey of 71 U.S. slot managers found that only 8 percent of casinos had cashless machines, but nearly 50 percent would have at least some in a year. "…Gamblers collect winnings from an ATM-like device. "Coinless slots don't jam as often and don't run out of coins. "Until recently, the cashless movement had met with only scattered success. But the technology won an unofficial casino seal of approval last spring when Park Place Entertainment, which manages Casino Windsor and owns or manages 28 other gambling halls, announced it would install 15,000 coinless slots…" |
