Detroit Casinos Rake in $743 Million

DETROIT, Michigan – Jan. 12, 2001 – As reported by the Detroit Free Press: "Adjusted gross revenues for Greektown, MGM Grand Detroit and MotorCity casinos totaled $743 million in 2000, based on figures released Wednesday by the Michigan Gaming Control Board. The total includes money spent on food, beverages, souvenirs and gambling. Of that $743 million, the City of Detroit collected $73.6 million in taxes and the state collected $60.2 million.

"Casino visitors poured $6 million more into Detroit's gaming market with the arrival of Greektown Casino, which opened Nov. 10. However, the infusion wasn't enough to offset severe winter weather and heightened competition among the casinos. MGM Grand and MotorCity revenues took slight dips in December.

"Daily average revenue at MGM Grand Detroit was $945,307 in December, a drop from the $1 million reported the previous December.

"…MotorCity felt most of the sting from increased competition. The casino, mostly owned by Mandalay Resort Group in Las Vegas, had average daily revenues of $734,154 in December. Visitors had been spending close to $1 million a day at the casino the month before Greektown Casino opened. MotorCity revenues were $22.8 million in December and $315.7 million for 2000…"
