Detroit Casinos Post Strong May Results14 June 2002DETROIT, Michigan – As reported by the Detroit News: "For the fifth straight month, all three Detroit casinos posted big revenue gains from a year earlier, partly because fewer gamblers are going to Casino Windsor and Las Vegas and partly because the Detroit operations are continuing to fine-tune their marketing. "The three casinos raked in revenues of $95.3 million in May, up 19 percent from a year earlier. "…MotorCity Casino, which opened in December 1999, led with $33.9 million in May revenues, up 17 percent from a year earlier. "…Casino Windsor's loss of business after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks raised border tensions has helped the Detroit operators. "…MGM Grand Detroit Casino, which opened in July 1999, was a close second in May, with revenues of $33.6 million, up 13 percent from a year earlier. "…In a bid to attract more gamblers from outside Metro Detroit and get them to stay longer, MGM Grand Detroit has begun teaming with local hotels to offer special room-and-meal packages. "Greektown Casino, which opened in November 2000, posted the greatest growth, with May revenues up nearly 30 percent from a year earlier to $27.8 million…" |
