Detroit Casinos Hit Summer Jackpot

DETROIT, Michigan – Nov. 24, 2000 – As reported by the Detroit Free Press: "…The month-by-month accounting shows that, overall, MGM Grand Detroit Casino has steadily taken in more money than rival MotorCity Casino, but in recent months MotorCity narrowed the gap. In some months, MotorCity's table games were more popular than MGM Grand's. MotorCity had more table games until it replaced some with slot machines this month.

"Since MGM Grand opened in July 1999 and MotorCity in December 1999, the two have taken in $225 million from their table games and $505 million from slot and video poker machines.

"…Revenues for both Detroit casinos were highest during summer months, although MGM Grand's best month was March, when the casino took in $37.5 million, or $1.2 million daily from its gamblers.

"…Detroit's first two casinos took in a grand total of $730 million from gamblers through the end of September, and chipped in $131 million to city and state treasuries. The casinos pay 18 percent of each day's take in taxes, 9.9 percent to the city and 8.1 percent to the state. The city has taken in $72 million from both casinos since their openings, and the state has taken in $59 million…"
