Detroit Casinos Hit September Jackpot16 October 2001DETROIT, Michigan –– As reported by the Detroit News: "Patrons at Detroit casinos appear to be heeding President Bush's patriotic call to get on with their lives. "Despite the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks that stunned the nation, September revenues at Detroit casinos were up 36 percent compared with the same period last year. "The month was the third strongest ever for Detroit's two-year-old gambling industry, with revenues rising to $85.2 million in September from $62.4 million a year ago. For the first three quarters of the year, revenues totaled $728.1 million, up 34.4 percent. "Detroit gambling halls' gains in September were in part Casino Windsor's loss. Heightened border security has made a visit to Canada a more trying experience. Casino Windsor, which had been the region's busiest casino and is heavily dependent on U.S. patrons, has lost half of its business. That amounts to an estimated $675,000 a day, or roughly $12.8 million from Sept. 11 through Sept. 30. "…But Detroit casinos' revenues improved by $22.8 million in September, meaning that they captured more than just Windsor's lost business. "…MGM Grand Detroit Casino: Now the market's busiest casino, MGM's revenues fell 10 percent to $31 million. In fact, MGM's revenues have fallen every month in 2001, though its profit margins consistently exceed MotorCity's. "…MotorCity Casino: Its revenues increased 6 percent to $29.7 million. "Greektown Casino: Its $24.5 million in revenues are its second-best month ever. "Business in October is good so far," spokesman Roger Martin said." |
