Detroit Casinos Fall Short on Residency Goals15 July 2001DETROIT, Michigan – July 15, 2001—As reported by the Detroit News: "Greektown Casino has failed to meet a requirement that more than half its workers were Detroit residents, while all three of the city's gambling halls hired fewer Detroit construction workers than promised, a recently released city review found. "As part of their development agreements with the city of Detroit, Greektown, MGM Grand Detroit Casino and MotorCity Casino pledged to meet certain goals while hiring construction workers, buying goods and services and staffing their casinos. "Among other things, they vowed that at least 51 percent of their workers would be Detroit residents. "…Both MGM Grand -- which in the past has been criticized for having too few local minority investors -- and MotorCity met that target, with 53 percent of their workers living in Detroit. "Also as part of the agreement with the city, the three casinos vowed to set aside 50 percent of their construction worker hours to Detroit residents, 25 percent to minorities, and 5 percent to women. "…Michigan's booming construction market made it difficult to find enough Detroit construction workers, the casinos said. "…All three casinos far exceeded targets to buy a certain percentage of goods and services from Detroit-based and small businesses, as well as those owned by women and minorities. And all three met targets in the hiring of minority construction workers." |
