Detroit Casino Nabs Suspected Craps Cheater

DETROIT, Michigan – Feb. 6, 2001 –As reported by the Detroit News: "Less than three months after opening its doors, Greektown Casino has built its first case of cheating against a gambler accused of using sleight of hand to bilk the gaming house of $10,000. The case, handled by the Michigan State Police and the Attorney General's Office, has already cost eight Greektown Casino dealers their jobs and could put Brent Morris, 44, in jail for 10 years.

" …At a preliminary hearing Monday, Michigan State Police Sgt. Frank Little of the gaming enforcement unit testified that he'd arrested Morris after casino officials had spied him on one of the casino's 1,000 cameras placing bets after the dice had been rolled at the craps table.

"…Placing bets after the dice are rolled is not illegal, but placing them after the dice have come to a final rest is.

"… Kandy Ronayne, a prosecutor with the Michigan Attorney General's office, presented videotapes of four separate incidents she and casino officials said were clear-cut evidence of cheating.

" …Prosecutors claim that during the deals in question, Morris asked for change just as the dice were rolled. And as he reached for his change -- after the dice had come to a stop -- he would retrieve his change and -- illegally -- drop chips on a winning spot on the table.

" But Morris' attorney argued that unheard on the silent recordings are Morris' spoken bets, which are allowed at some casinos, but not in Detroit's…"
