Denver Officials Break Two Check Counterfeiting Rings

DENVER, COLORADO – Oct. 5, 2000 – As reported by The Dever Rocky Mountain News: "Two counterfeiting rings that raked in more than $4.5 million have been broken up by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and local police.

"…[One] ring, operating out of Southern California, used a computer to make counterfeit copies of genuine payroll checks from several Colorado businesses, including two Black Hawk casinos and a Sedalia construction company, CBI spokesman Pete Mang said.

"The checks were then cashed at local banks by men using counterfeit alien identification cards and fake employee identification cards.

"…Since February, the ring has cashed phony checks that drained more than $200,000 from the checking accounts of the Lodge Casino and Mardi Gras Casino in Black Hawk.

"The CBI said it also arrested members of a second California ring that stole more than $4 million from Wells Fargo banks. The Colorado agency had been working with the FBI and Postal Service on the investigation…"
