Demand Rises…for counseling25 September 2001The state of Missouri Department of Health budgeted incorrectly for its counseling services for problem gamblers, underestimating the number of people who need counseling, leaving many without support. Governor Bob Holden budgeted only enough to cover the projected caseload of 225 gamblers, a number now expected to double in the coming year. Casino entrance fees are supposed to fund the outpatient counseling program. However, of those fees collected, only a marginal amount is allocated to counseling. Rick Cox, of Bridgeway Counseling Service Inc. in St. Charles, Missouri said those desperately seeking free counseling are at risk of being turned away. |
