Debate Set on Massachusetts Slots28 March 2003BOSTON, Massachusetts – As reported by the Associated Press: "The Massachusetts House of Representatives has scheduled an entire day next month to debate allowing slot machines and casinos in the state, a move some say could make it easier to defeat any gambling expansion measures. "The debate is scheduled for April 15, before the House considers next year's budget, meaning legislators won't know the severity of budget cuts when they debate it and won't be able to consider how gambling might address the problem, House Republican leader Bradley H. Jones Jr. said. "Jones noted that members will be able to consider tax increases after the budget is released by House Speaker Thomas Finneran, a staunch opponent of gambling expansion. "…At Finneran's urging, the House passed a rule Wednesday to prevent any gambling expansions to be considered when the state takes up the budget on April 30. Instead, the April 15 debate was scheduled. If the House defeats the gambling bills now, it would be difficult for the Senate to push them later because of legislative rules that prevent the same issue from coming before the same body twice in the same legislative term…" |
