De La Hoya Vs. Vargas 'Mega Fight'5 September 2002LAS VEGAS – (Press Release) -- World Champions Oscar De La Hoya and Fernando Vargas will finally meet at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino on September 14, 2002. The highly anticipated bout will air on HBO Pay Per View. De La Hoya vs. Vargas was initially scheduled for May 4. De La Hoya sustained a hand injury while sparring at his camp in Big Bear, Calif. Bob Arum, President of Top Rank, and Kathy Duva, President of Main Events, made the announcement. "Oscar is very anxious to take on Vargas," Arum said. Both fighters have promised punishing victories. "Vargas said he has 'personal issues' to settle with the Golden Boy." De La Hoya, 29, is a 1992 Olympic gold medal winner. He has a record of 34-2 with 27 knockouts. In world title bouts, De La Hoya is 20-2. Vargas, 24, is 22-1 with 20 KOs. He is an extremely hard puncher and is known as the Aztec Warrior. |
