David Chiu Wins $202,000 in Last Night's Seven-Card Stud Finals12 May 2000David Chiu won $202,000 last night in the 19th tournament in the 2000 World Series of Poker. A professional from Rowland Heights, California, Chiu beat 99 opponents in the Seven-Card Stud contest. The buy-in was $5,000. Mike Carson won $222,000 Wednesday night in a pot-limit Texas Hold 'Em tournament. Carson beat 199 competitors, each of whom bought in for $3,000. Carson is a poker pro from Laguna Beach, California. This was his first World Series gold bracelet. Tuesday night, Huck Seed, a pro from Las Vegas, defeated 128 players to win the $1,500 buy-in Seven-Card Razz event. In 1996, Seed won the World Championship. A rookie took home $160,000 Monday night in the $2,500 buy-in Omaha High-Low Split contest. Michael Sohayegh, a real estate broker from New York City, had only played in three poker tournaments before entering the World Series. Sohayegh, who was born in Iran, beat 159 competitors. Each day, one of these two-day tournaments begins. It all leads up to the World Championship, a four-day tournament that starts Monday, May 15. That event has a $10,000 buy-in, and the top price this year may reach $1.5 million. The World Series is held at Binion's Horseshoe in downtown Las Vegas. |
