Damaged Net Cable Will Hurt Oz Internet Business

AUSTRALIA – As reported by Age.com.au: ``Some Internet-reliant businesses would be hard hit as damage to a major undersea cable continued to disrupt web users, business leaders said today.

``The 39,000km SEAMEWE 3 cable was damaged on the sea floor about 100km from Singapore yesterday afternoon, possibly by a passing ship or fishing trawler.

``Internet services between Australia, Asia and Europe could be slow for the next few days as Singapore and Indonesian crews carry out repairs.

``The slowdown caused a logjam in the Telstra system last night and prompted warnings that businesses depended too heavily on the Internet.

``Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) chief executive Mark Paterson said it was difficult to estimate how much the delays could cost Australian businesses.

``He said companies that relied completely on the Internet, such as online stores, would suffer most.

```…It will (reduce productivity), and it could diminish commercial opportunities.'

``…Oz Net Law spokesman John Corker said the incident showed how heavily business relied on technology that could be brought to its knees by a minor accident…"
