Daily Racing Form to Publish "Kentucky Derby Futures Edition"15 February 2000It's not too early to begin thinking about the Kentucky Derby, according to the Daily Racing Form. The publication said the first of three "Kentucky Derby Futures Edition'' issues will be on U.S. newsstands tomorrow, Feb. 16. The 126th Derby runs Saturday, May 6. The Daily Racing Form special edition, which costs $3, contains in-depth handicapping information, including lifetime past performances with Beyer speed figures and timeform ratings (for European races) of every Derby nominee, as well as expert analysis from the newspaper's national handicapper Mike Watchmaker and national correspondent Jay Privman. There will also be key Kentucky Derby statistics which chronicle the "Run For the Roses'' ' storied history. In addition, the special edition will offer the numbers for all 24 betting interests in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager. Churchill Downs' Future Wager is a pari-mutuel wager that allows fans to bet early and lock in high prices on possible entrants for the Derby. There will be three separate wagering pools -- Feb. 17-20, March 9-12 and April 13-16 -- to place advance bets on the Derby. Each pool will include 24 betting interests (23 designated horses plus the Field for all other runners), which are determined by a three-member committee. Racetracks and other betting outlets around the country will participate in the Future Wager. The Daily Racing Form will provide updates in conjunction with the second and third wagering windows. Also, this year's three wagering opportunities directly coincide with major Kentucky Derby prep races across the country. The Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream, and the Risen Star at Fair Grounds will be contested during the first wagering pool, Feb. 17-20. The Florida Derby (Gulfstream) and Louisiana Derby (Fair Grounds) take place during the March 9-12 window. The final advance wagering opportunity will be available while the Toyota Blue Grass (Keeneland), Arkansas Derby (Oaklawn) and Wood Memorial (Aqueduct) are being run. In addition to the special editions, the Daily Racing Form will again publish a weekly "DerbyWatch" page in all regular editions. Watchmaker will give his own "future book" odds and assessments of the top 25 leading contenders for the Derby. |
