Crooked Tax Assessor Gambled with Bribe Money29 October 2002NEW YORK – As reported by the New York Post: "A corrupt tax assessor who helped cheat New York out of $160 million said yesterday he resorted to taking bribes because he was a lousy gambler. "Paul Sopot, 56, who admits to taking $70,000 in bribes over five years, will be spending two years assessing the inside of a prison cell after a federal judge said he abused the public's trust. "…Sopot, the second assessor to be sentenced in the last week in connection to the scam allegedly run by retired assessor Albert Schussler, said he used the money to pay off gambling debts. "…Sopot was ordered to pay the city $20,000 within 60 days - the first installment in paying back $160 million…" |
