Court Won't Hear Louisiana Case

LOUISIANA – As reported by the Louisiana Advocate: "Cameron Parish's last attempt to get two gambling-related propositions on Tuesday's ballot failed Saturday when the Louisiana Supreme Court refused to hear arguments in the case.

"The propositions would have asked voters if they wanted to declare the lower Sabine River and Sabine Lake legal for gambling and if they wanted to put a riverboat casino in either location.

"Earlier this year, the Cameron Parish Police Jury approved a proposal from the Isle of Capri Casino to move a riverboat to the parish.

"Later, the Police Jury filed a lawsuit against Secretary of State Fox McKeithen to force him to put the measures on the ballot.

"…A subsequent appeal to the Louisiana Supreme Court ended in defeat for the Police Jury on Saturday when the court denied the writ.

"…The 1st Circuit had ruled that only the Legislature can determine which waterways are eligible for riverboat casinos…"
