Court Ups Alleged Bookie's Bond

29 April 2003

Indianola, Iowa -- As reported by the Des Moines Register: "A judge Monday upped the ante on bookmaking suspect Robert Derryberry, a professional gambler who asked the court to allow him to travel to poker games at Missouri casinos.

"Derryberry, 60, accused of running a multimillion-dollar illegal-gambling operation from his Norwalk home, was given permission to leave the state - if he posted an additional $35,000 bond.

"Derryberry remained out of jail on a $58,500 bond awaiting trial on charges of illegal gambling, money laundering and ongoing criminal conduct.

"...Derryberry is accused of operating a sports betting operation that has allegedly involved a teacher and several businessmen, including Jim Rasmussen, chairman of the Racing Association of Central Iowa. The group holds the gambling license for Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino. Rasmussen has not been charged, but he has been called as a witness to testify about the alleged bookmaking operation. The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission is investigating whether he placed bets with the operation.

"...Confining Derryberry to Iowa casinos hampers his ability to earn a living, [F. Montgomery Brown, his laywer] said.

"...Assistant Warren County Attorney Patricia Notch argued against allowing Derryberry to leave the state..."
