Court Considers Allowing Gambling on Nebraska Ballot

NEBRASKA -- As reported by the Journal-Star: ``After suffering a week of defeats, supporters of expanded gambling won a limited victory Friday.

``The state Supreme Court has agreed to consider allowing the gambling initiative to be on the Nov. 5 ballot and to consider whether the issue will move immediately to the Supreme Court for a final decision, bypassing the lower Court of Appeals.

``...Chief Justice John Hendry said in a one-page order that supporters of legalizing video slot machines in Nebraska had shown sufficient cause for the Supreme Court to consider whether they should be allowed to post a "supercedeas" bond, thus guaranteeing that the proposal could be printed on the ballot.

``...In the Friday order Hendry said only that the Supreme Court would consider taking up the case itself, but most people connected to the case expect that the high court will take jurisdiction over the case.

``The proposed amendment would change the state's constitution to allow video slot machines in bars, restaurants, racetracks and keno parlors, and in designated video slot parlors situated within 20 miles of any community in a neighboring state that already has video gambling.

``...Kimball Mayor Greg Robinson, chairman of petition committee, is hopeful Nebraskans will see the issue on the ballot..."
