Couple Held in Colorado Lottery Ticket Thefts

8 July 2002

COLORADO -- As reported by the Denver Post: ``Luck has run out for a couple accused of trying to eke out a living by stealing lottery tickets.

``Longmont police on Saturday arrested the husband-and-wife duo on suspicion of stealing Colorado Lottery scratch tickets from three dozen convenience and grocery stores during a six-week crime spree along the Front Range.

``Their technique was simple, police said: Ask to see tickets, distract the clerk and run out of the store. But after scratching the tickets, they often made only a few dollars in winnings.

```They weren't going to get rich doing it,' said Officer Matt Cage, who made the arrests. As he noted, any large prize requires identification and a trip to a lottery office. ``...Cage, who was on patrol in the area, noticed a blond woman sitting in a pickup who matched the description from the 7-Eleven. He quietly approached the vehicle and saw Tamara Meier-Frawley busily scratching away on the tickets.
```There were tons of tickets all over the car,' Cage said, estimating the couple stole 35 of the $5 tickets from the two stores.

``...The couple told police they were spending the modest winnings on `day-to-day' expenses like motel rooms and drugs..."
