COOL MILLIONS(TM) X 811 October 1996LAS VEGAS, A new millionaire emerged at the lucky hour of 7:11 p.m. Saturday at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Cheryl Mertz of Midland, Texas, a 39-year old senior administrative assistant at Park & Parsley Petroleum played just $18 before winning $8,708,634.89. She played the maximum $3 bet and lined up three COOL MILLIONS(TM) symbols on the $1 statewide, progressive game. "Last Tuesday, I was watching "Roseanne" ... the one where she won the lottery," said Mertz. "For three straight nights I dreamed that I won a million dollars in Las Vegas. My husband said, 'Maybe you will!' He was right, and them some." Mertz was presented, on the spot, with a check for One Million Dollars by Casino Data Systems' chairman, Steven Weiss. The remainder of the dollar jackpot amount will be paid out in equal, annual installments over the next 19 years. "I was having a nice conversation with the fella sitting next to me when the lights started flashing," said Ms. Mertz. "The change attendant came by an said 'What have you won?' I'm not sure, I said, but I think it is the big one!" "We called our son at home. He said to us, 'you're joking,'" said Cheryl. "He thought I was pulling his leg. When he realized I wasn't kidding around he said right away 'Mom, can I have a car?' I'm not sure what I'm going to do with all this money," said Cheryl, "I know for sure I want to help my family." The jackpot follows on the heels of a $1.2 million jackpot won last Tuesday on the new Caribbean Stud(R) Video Poker progressive machines.
