Controversial Missouri Casino Plan Promoted25 September 2002ROCKAWAY BEACH, Missouri -- As reported by the Associated Press: ``A Minneapolis casino developer says he has set aside $5 million to convince Missouri voters to change the state Constitution to allow gambling on Lake Taneycomo. ``Jim Druck, president and founder of Southwest Casino and Hotel Corp., said at a public hearing Monday that he is ready to spend $100 million to build a floating casino in Rockaway Beach. ``...The development would swallow most of the depressed resort community including three-tenths of the half-mile lakefront. ``However, the project faces several obstacles. Voters statewide would have to approve an initiative to change a provision of the Constitution that currently allows gambling only on the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. ``The development also requires approval from the state Legislature and Gov. Bob Holden, who has said he won't expand gambling in the state..." |
