Consumer Fraud In Kyl Country?

11 April 1997

Have a look at what the (Kyl) Arizona State Lottery says about odds at their home page.

"all of you smart players out there can use the information provided here to help increase your odds of becoming a jackpot winner"

What's that you say? You can use the information "to increase your odds of becoming a jackpot winner." You mean to say this information will "change" the laws of probability? (I'm sure you don't mean make the odds even longer). You must mean make it "easier" to win, like "increase your chances."

This what the site says:-

"INCREASE YOUR ODDS
If you clicked on this page hoping to get an edge.... you came to the right place. While we're not giving anyone here an unfair advantage, all of you smart players out there can use the information provided here to help increase your odds of becoming a jackpot winner. Just click on the areas below to find out how."

So, you mean "improve" your odds in lotteries? Now, just tell me how that works? So, Arizona is like a statistical blackhole, combinatorial theory sort of doesn't work in Arizona, huh? Maybe it's the dry heat.

The only relevant information linked to this page shows the history of certain numbers. Like most frequently drawn, least frequently drawn. As all smart lottery players know (and all Lottery Directors should know), what has gone before "does not" affect the probability of any number being drawn or not drawn in any particular draw.

Little ping pong balls 'don't have no memory.' They don't know whose turn it is to be drawn or not drawn. They don't feel hot, they don't feel cold. They just feel round. They are inanimate little plastic round things. They can't think. (Hey! They could become Senators!)

Yet the site says "INCREASE YOUR ODDS", do you mean of WINNING?"

LIARS!

This crap is misleading consumers about probability and could induce a consumer to play their paycheck in the belief that they have an increased chance of winning a jackpot because of false and misleading information. Supplied in this case not by a Alt Lotto Newsgroup Spammer, but a State Government? The Arizona State Government! Like I thought you guys were worried people would be "deceived and defrauded" on the Internet.

Ahhhhh. Now, I see what Senator Kyl meant...deceived over the Internet by the Arizona State Lottery!

Interestingly, I got to this site via the Arizona Republican party page. That's an interesting little coincidence, don't you think?

Well, now you've got to be real careful on the web. If you say something that ain't true..... you can get sued for consumer fraud....'specially in Minnesota.
