Connecticut Tribe Withdraws Plan for Casino

NEW LONDON Connecticut –– As reported by the Associated Press: "The Eastern Pequot tribe has withdrawn its petition to build a $500 million casino complex at the Harold E. Shear State Pier.

"`The timing of our proposal is not right,' Chief Roy Sebastian told the City Council Monday night. `The details we have presented are raising more questions than answers.'

"…After Sebastian's announcment, the council voted again, and by a 4-3 margin reconsidered their original motion and decided not to go on record against the concept of a casino.

"…In March, the tribe announced that State Pier was their number one choice for a casino site.

"The tribe had said its casino would employ 4,500 people and generate a $6.5 million annual payment to the city to replace lost tax revenues.

"The tribe also proposed giving the city a one-time $7.5 million payment for the property The tribe had asked the City Council to let city residents in a citywide vote decide if they would support the idea of a casino."
