Connecticut Tribe Offers Revenues for Casino16 September 2002BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut – As reported by the Connecticut Post: "The Golden Hill Paugussett Indians are offering the city 10 percent of slot machine revenues if the tribe receives federal permission to open a casino here. "Other distressed communities in the state, perhaps Hartford or New Haven, could share another 10 percent of slot revenue under a proposed contract that will be unveiled at the City Council's meeting Tuesday night. "Also, Waterbury would receive 3 percent of the handle as a payoff for breaking a contract the Paugussetts signed a decade ago to locate a casino there. And communities elsewhere in the state that host tribal businesses or villages would share 2 percent of slot revenue. "In return, the pact calls for Bridgeport to set aside 200 acres within the city for a casino, bingo hall and related facilities. The city also would `help" secure another 1,000 acres elsewhere in Connecticut for tribal villages and other projects. "…The pact, however, appears to face significant hurdles to approval, and may potentially conflict with existing state agreements with other tribes. "…There also does not appear to be strong interest among other city officials for signing any tribal contracts at this point, considering that the Golden Hill Paugussetts do not yet have federal recognition, and may not gain final approval for years…" |
