Connecticut Tribe Disappointed with City Casino Resolution3 December 2002BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut -- The City Council has approved negotiations for a casino in Bridgeport with a state Indian tribe that is still awaiting federal recognition. The council Monday night approved a resolution empowering the mayor to enter into an agreement with the Golden Hill Paugussett Indian tribe. The move came in anticipation of possible federal recognition for the tribe, which could occur within the next several weeks. Recognition would open the door for the tribe to develop a casino. The draft agreement offers the tribe a site for the casino in exchange for 10 percent of the casino's gross operating revenue from slot machines, gaming tables, theaters, hotels and recreational facilities. Paugusset Chief Quiet Hawk and tribe advocates said they were disappointed by the resolution. "What they are presenting is ridiculous and absurd," Quiet Hawk said Monday night. "They are trying to blow the deal off the table and save face by saying they made a fair offer." |
